Am I understanding Anwar Ibrahim's acquittal correctly? If the conviction on sodomy charges is overturned, then there was no sodomy offence to cover up to begin with?

If this is the case, then shouldn't the earlier conviction of corruption/abuse of power to cover up the alleged sodomy also be overturned even though the sentence had been served?

This can happen on the Sept 6 review by the Federal Court, which should take into account the court's own judgment on Sept 2.

If the earlier conviction is also overturned, then Anwar can stand for elections and lead a political party, perhaps as early as Sept 6.

Given the political significance of this, would there be political pressure to stop this from happening, giving rise to self-contradicting court judgments - upholding first conviction on corruption but quashing the second conviction on sodomy?
